A Necessary Addition To Any Country Fan's Collection
    Jun 10, 2013  |  By J. R.  LA, United States
Since this package isn't available through the normal channels, I thought I'd share some thoughts this on this wonderful collection here. This was certainly unexpected. Statlers' fans have been waiting for their back catalog to become readily available for years. While it seemed like this would've been a task for a label like Germany's Bear Family, it never happened, and who would've thought that Reader's Digest would've taken the initiative? The music - Included here are the Statlers' first eight albums for Mercury. If you've never ventured beyond the compilations you'll find plenty here to love. If you're already familiar with the music on these albums then it will be like revisiting old friends. Plenty of self-written (and very well-written) songs that tell stories, something that the Statlers' excelled at (they were definitely in the same league as labelmate Tom T. Hall). If you discovered the Statlers through Pulp Fiction or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and liked what you heard, there's plenty more where that came from. Packaging - the front covers of the album are reproduced on the CD inserts. Given the detail that the group gave to their cover artwork, it would be quite a task to adapt it to CD booklet form. The sound quality is excellent. These discs were not mastered loud or with noise reduction. Elliott Federman did a wonderful job with the transfers and making these classic recordings shine. I would like to say thanks to John Alexander for putting this package together, and here's hoping that Reader's Digest will see fit to do another one of these sets to collect the eight remaining Lew-era albums (discounting the Holy Bible albums, which really should be reissued together in one package themselves, rather than full-price individual CDs. They should be put back into print at any rate.)
